Leicester v Crystal Palace

S.M. at 2017-12-16 15:44:12

This game provided the Referee with differing facets to deal with. Very little of note happened throughout the first half with The visitors surprising the home team by scoring two goal. In this period the Referee was able to adopt a “low profile” , apply advantage where possible and generally keep stoppages to a minimum. As expected given the score at half-time the intensity increased but Martin used his experience in realising this and clamped down on all offences to ensure control was maintained at a good level. When challenges became more than careless as frustration by home players surfaced in their quest to find a way back into the game, then rightly three caution in three minutes were completely sensible, as was the dismissal of Ndidi for a second caution for simulation. The denial of a “goal” following a push on a Palace defender was an excellent decision by the Referee and was a plus to his performance. It was disappointing therefore that the negative side was illustrated by the failure to award a penalty kick for the foul on Benteke, even though the Referee was well positioned to view the challenge. However, the Referee did not let this error affect the remainder of the game and continued to work hard, using all his experience to ensure control was never under threat.

Don’t forget further RefCam coverage today at 17.30 when Manchester City take on Spurs, tomorrow West Brom v Manchester Utd at 14.15 and Bournemouth v Liverpool at 16.30 and finally Monday evening Everton v Swansea at 20.00.

What are your thoughts on the Referees performance.? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or e-mail us at [email protected]    Palace substitution Riedewald for Cabake.  Leicester substituitonUlloa for Vardy..   Foul by Simpson on Townsend. Yellow Cardfor Simpson deservedly given.

S.M. at 2017-12-16 15:08:48

It is essential that the Referee keeps his focus for the remaining 12 or so minutes. Martin Atkinson is experienced enough to realise this is a  must. He must keep working hard to keep reasonably near to play to ensure the level of control is not allowed to deteriorate.

S.M. at 2017-12-16 15:04:09

Leicester substituitons  Okazaki for Iborra and King for Albrighton.

at 2017-12-16 15:01:27

Corner kick to Leicester as the home team try to respond.

at 2017-12-16 14:59:13

Foul on Zaha by Maguire penalised. Referee sensibly not looking to allow advantages. Another free-kick to Palace for a minor illegal challenge.

at 2017-12-16 14:55:58

Foul by Schlupp on Mahrez on edge of penalty area. Free-kick to Leicester comes to nothing.

S.M. at 2017-12-16 14:52:33

As expected the intensity has increased and the Referee has now taken action to reduce this with sensible and warranted cautions to ensure his level of control is maintained. Iborra heads the ball into goal, but excellent decision by the Referee to spot the push on the Palace defender and rule out the “goal”..  Simulation by Ndidi is recognised by the Referee and gets a second Yellow Card and hence a Red Carddismissal.  Two good decisions by the Referee.  Albrighton commits late challenge on Benteke but no foul given. Definite error by the Referee on this one in not awarding a penalty kick.

S.M. at 2017-12-16 14:42:57

Foul by Maguire on Tomkins and correctly is cautioned Yellow Card

S.M. at 2017-12-16 14:39:41

Foul on Gray missed by the Referee as Palace then able to start another attack. Strange Martin Atkinson missed that one as he had a good view, albeit from a little way adrift.   Foul by Benteke on Iborra. Yellow Cardfor Benteke.      Ndidi fouls Loftus-Cheek and receives Yellow Card.

Increase in intensity recognised by the Referee; hence increased action by Referee.

S.M. at 2017-12-16 14:34:48

Good flag signal by AR2  allows Referee  to award free-kick to Palace.

S.M. at 2017-12-16 14:23:57

Nothing much to worry the Referee during the first half. He worked hard to adopt positions which were always appropriate for the passages of play and managed to get unobstructed views of what few offences that were committed. He has introduced advantage when possible to allow the game to breath and flow, but has always penalised the minor offences when application of advantage was not an option. Hopefully the Referee will be ready for the increased intensity which one would expect to see from the home team who need something to get themselves back into the contest. Let’s see what happens. Just time for a cuppa before we go again.

Foul on Loftud-Cheek by Mahrez correctly penalised with Free-kick to Palace.

S.M. at 2017-12-16 14:02:47

Clumsy foul on Benteke. Free-kick to Palace.  Foul by Kelly on Gray correctly penalised with a free-kick to Leicester. Corner kick to Leicester.  Again the Referee well positioned.

S.M. at 2017-12-16 13:57:54

Another good advantage played following a minor foul on McArthur as Palace attack. Good to see a clear arm signal employed by the Referee.

S.M. at 2017-12-16 13:55:36

Referee has a good look at the incident where Leicester thought there was a handball inside the penalty area and decided no offence had occurred. Play allowed to continue.

S.M. at 2017-12-16 13:52:52

This is the time for the Referee to raise his awareness as the home team are likely to increase their intensity to try to get an immediate response. Advantage played but then a free kick correctly awarded to Leicester as the Palace attacker pulls back his opponent.

S.M. at 2017-12-16 13:49:31

Not too much happening so it is import for the Officials to maintain a high level of concentration.    Out of nothing Crystal Palace score their first away goal of the season with a Benteke header GOAL!

S.M. at 2017-12-16 13:40:20

Advantage allowed y the Referee as Palace have an attacking option.

First corner kick to Leicester. Good position adopted by the Referee to obtain unobstructed views

S.M. at 2017-12-16 13:38:05

Good positioning by the Referee to monitor challenges within the Leicester penalty area.

S.M. at 2017-12-16 13:33:17

Illegal challenge by Benteke on Schmeichel as the goalkeeper has to head the ball outside of the penalty area. Free kick to Leicester.

Good morning and welcome to the first of this weekends RefCam matches.  This features Leicester City against Crystal Palace.    Leicester have won their last four games while Palace are unbeaten in six. The Offciials charged with keeping control are as follows:

Referee: Martin Atkinson       Assistants: Peter Kirkup and Adrian Holmes   4th Official: Jon Moss.

Martin Atkinson is one of the Premier Leagues most experienced Referees and has clearly been picked for his ability to control very competitive games. Join me to see if this is the case when the game starts in around 45 minutes time.
