Last Friday I watched very closely the performance of Coote officiating Bristol City’s visit to Sheffield United in The Championship.
He displayed a performance that leaves me worried as to why he has not achieved promotion yet because he is clearly a referee with talent and should be given a chance to prove himself on the biggest stage of domestic football.
His movement around the field of play and ability to accelerate to maintain contact with the game played a major role in the accuracy of his decision-making.
He got the big decision correct taking up a great position to see the ‘Serious Foul Play’ challenge committed by Sheffield United’s John Fleck that resulted in a red card being issued.
His management of the players was very good and he demonstrated courage by applying some good advantages ensuring good game flow.
He appears to be producing high standard performances on a consistent basis…. so why hasn’t he been promoted to Select Group 1.
The PGMOL must demonstrate, by action, that there is a clear pathway to the top for our match officials and a promotion for David Coote would be an excellent example of that.
